What Are The Roles of Each BTS Member?

BTS
BTS, South Korean Boy Band

BTS is a team. The group has always emphasized that they are a team and they work as a team. However, they also do single or small group songs, which are promoted by all the members.

Every BTS member is indispensable because each member has roles that they contribute to the group. Let’s go into the specifics of each of these roles.

Kim Namjoon (RM, Joonie)

RM is the consummate leader of BTS. He is the main rapper and was the first recruited member of BTS.
He was hired promptly by BigHit and tasked as the leader of the group.

RM’s role is diverse that could include the following:

• Leads the members to a harmonious working atmosphere

• Most fluent English speaker; so, speaks the most during English interviews and translates for the members

• Lyricist – writes interesting lyrics for BTS songs, and his own songs; the Korean Music Copyright Association (KCMA) attributes over 170 songs to him. He’s an incredible lyricist, spinning lyrics into one cohesive, musical masterpiece.

• Hangeul – English interpreter; he often interprets during interviews

• Moderator during misunderstandings between members and between their company and the members; but these occasions are rare because the boys acknowledged that they love their company.

• Leads the group and ARMYs. Recently, RM have extracted an explanation and apology on national TV from James Corden for his jokes that ARMY found tasteless.

RM ‘cleared the air” between James Corden and ARMY by allowing the host to express his regret with ‘jokes’ that he thought were harmless.

However, ARMYs were mad at his tasteless jokes for calling them 15-year olds, and stating that the group were unusual visitors to the United Nations.

ARMY, however, called him out and unfollowed him. If the boys did not intervene, the beef would have been unresolved until now.

RM said “We appreciate your apology,” and with Corden’s apology, ARMYs have also moved on from the incident.
He did it with finesse, demonstrating his skill as a diplomat.

Also, during the press conference of BTS Permission to Dance on Stage in LA on November 2021, Liam McEwan asked this question: “…You’ve always been humble, and you’ve always believed in yourself. But amongst all the success how do you stay true to yourself?

RM replied:

“It’s very simple. There’s 100% of success, and I’ll give 50, I’ll give half to the ARMYs and then the other half, I put like 5% each, like 5% value. So, that’s 35. And I give 15% to the Hybe and Bighit. So, if it’s a trophy, my percent is like 5, it’s like the edge of the trophy.

So, if you always realize that to yourself, or you’re just nothing, you’re just a piece, a little part of this whole journey. This success is not all yours. I always try to realize that for myself, and it really helps me, keep myself down to earth, and I think it’s really important to survive in this crazy industry.”

Kim Seokjin (Jin)

Jin is nicknamed WorldWide Handsome (WWH) because he tends to attract various people around the world to his handsome face.

The GP called him several names, trying to identify him from the other group members, as they were drawn to him: “the third guy from the left”, “the flying kiss guy”, “the car door guy.”

He is the oldest among the group, so the members tend to look up to him. He is also the friendliest according to some people.

In Korea, hierarchy is usually observed based on one’s age or length of service. The seniors are expected to be respected by their juniors.

Jin’s role could include the following:

• As the eldest, he contributes to the leader’s and the group’s goals

• Takes care of the younger members, and is often called “eoma” (mother), just like J-Hope.

You can see him making sure every member had his share of anything he was eating, by feeding them himself

• Breaks the ice among new friends, he approaches people first and befriend them. People he came across always said he was friendly and approachable.

There are many stories detailing about how Jin remains humble and friendly up to this day, despite his popularity.

One of Jin’s co-trainee saw him at the bus station and didn’t greet him because she was uncertain if he would acknowledge her, since he was already a famous personality.

To her surprise, when Jin saw her, he called out her name and proceeded to talk with her. She was impressed of how humble Jin was and still is.

Another story was when Jin brought a senior singer to the front stage when he found them at the back all to themselves.

• As WWH, he acts as one of the stunning visuals of BTS. Jin was officially named, The Best Looking Man in the World by the Andrey Beauty Studio

• Acts as the “Joker’ of the group for his dad jokes and humorous quips

Min Yoongi (Suga)

Suga is the lead rapper of BTS. Reportedly, he can rap 9.83 to 117 syllables per second. The reports vary but, undoubtedly, he’s one of the fastest rappers in Korea.

He’s also a favorite among other artists who would like to collaborate with BTS.

The members sometimes call Suga the Grandpa of the group because at times he just watches silently (like a grandpa) while the other members clown around.

However, don’t be deceived, as when the mood suits him, he becomes a frivolous dork, as well.

Some people who knew Suga during trainee days attest to the fact that he is a kind and generous soul.

One trainee recounted how Suga brought him to the hospital and helped pay for the hospital bill, despite him being financially constraint at that time.

Suga had been working part-time to augment his meager finances, but he still found it in his heart to help people in need.

Also, on his birthday, he donates to charitable institutions every year – just like the other members.

When he was still a trainee, he promised his friends that he would donate the first-class pork meat to charity if he becomes famous. He fulfilled this promise afterwards.

Suga donated on his 28th birthday to the Children’s Cancer Society $88,000.

BTS has been a solid supporter of UNICEF’s end violence campaign and the UN’s global goals.

All of BTS members have been donating individually and as a group to charitable institutions around the world.

A Twitter-based BTS-ARMY group, One in an ARMY, is in charge of donations to various needy communities all around the world in the name of BTS and ARMY.

Suga’s roles may include the following:

• Moderator during ‘sticky’ situations or when BTS is in ‘danger’. He replied brilliantly to a reporter who asked sensitive questions about plagiarism, and also replied wisely to a rapper who said they looked like girls

• When all the members are getting playful, he is the serious one, making sure they don’t go to the extremes

• Produces songs for BTS and other artists; that’s why he is named the genius producer. He can compose two or more songs every day with his ingenious mind.

He also collaborated with other artists, as a solo artist, such as Halsey, IU, and Max, to name a few

Jung Hoseok (J-Hope, Hobi)

J-Hope is called the sunshine of the group because of his sunny disposition. He is the lead dancer of the group and one of the three rappers.

His line: “I’m your hope, you’re my hope, I’m J-Hope!” rings inside the stadiums whenever the BTS members introduce themselves.

J-Hope had momentarily left the group before their debut but came back because he trusted the members. RM also reiterated to BigHit that they needed J-Hope.

J-Hope is often the bias-wrecker of the group, with WWW champion and actor John Cena stanning him.

And, indeed, the group relies heavily on him now during performances as the dance leader. Know more about J-Hope here.

Like the other two rappers, RM and Suga, J-Hope also produced his own mixtapes achieving success with his music.

Among J-Hopes roles are:

• Acts as the “mother’, ensuring that everything is clean and in order in their ‘household’

• Brings cheers to the group when they need it. You will see him dancing onto the stage during the group’s introduction on TV shows

• Helps the members practice their dance steps. He is known to be a strict dance teacher

• Acts as an anchor for the younger members to the older members by always breaking the ice and enlivening the discourse

Park Jimin (Jimin)

Jimin is one of the vocalists of the group. He is often tasked to sing the highest notes of BTS’ songs as his voice is pitch perfect.

He is also second to J-Hope as the lead dancer in the group. But, take note that all of them are good dancers.

He had graduated as a top dance student, so it’s a given that he could dance flawlessly.

Jimin made history by ranking #1 for 34 consecutive months on the idol brand reputation for individual boy groups in Korea up to 2021.

Some of Jimin’s roles are:

• Acts as the “charmer” of the group. People find him charming – even men. He often captures the attention of many male fans.

• Comforts members who are sad. He is often the one who goes over to a crying member to embrace him or comfort him during concerts or events.

• Takes center stage to perform his body flipping movements during performances. His elegant and smooth dance movements have captured audiences from all over the world.

• Favorite of TV talk shows, Jimmy Fallon and James Corden are Jimin stans. James is even called “Papa Mochi”. Although, James had a brief fallout with ARMYs, all is well now because RM had “cleared the air.” The hosts love all the members, though.

Of course, they’re all ‘favorites’ of various media. Read this review of their first in-person live Permission to Dance concert in LA by Independent.UK.

Kim Taehyung (V)

V is one of the 4 vocalists of the group. He is often in charge of singing low tones, as he has a rich baritone voice.

He has been chosen often as one of the most handsome men in the world.

In September 29, 2021, he was named “Most Handsome Man in the World in 2021” by All K-pop and Asian News International in the same week, and by Nubia Magazine on September 30, 2021.

The survey was conducted worldwide with 183 countries participating, bringing in millions of votes.

V will also participate in the soundtrack of the upcoming Korean drama “Our Beloved Summer”, which will premiere on December 2021.

He is not new in these ventures as he previously sang “Sweet Night” for “Itaweon Class” and “It’s Definitely You” for “Hwarang” with his bandmate, Jin.

Kim Taehyung’s roles could include the following:

• Because of his genuine creativity, he is often asked about new ideas that the band could use.

Make no mistake, though, as all the boys are creative in their own ways.

• As the actor. He has acted in the “Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth” historical drama. So, when the group’s activity is about acting, they call on him and Jin.

• As one of the faces of BTS, as he is often voted as the Most Handsome face. In a survey, V ranked 1st as the Most Popular Celebrity in Japan for 28 successive weeks.

V is one of the faces of TC Chandler’s Most Handsome Men 2020, ranked at #2, with some of his bandmates in the list as well.

Jeon Jungkook (Jungkook)

Jungkook is the youngest member and is named the Golden Maknae because of his ability to be good in almost anything.

He is the lead vocals, but he also raps and dances well. He is into sports, such as boxing and taekwondo.

They have won several 400 m – relays in the past because of his incredible speed as the last person in their group’s relay lineup.

This video depicts, exactly, BTS’ entry into the music world. No one has seen it coming and no one betted on them, except ARMYs and BigHit.

So, when they won (succeeded), these people had the surprise of their lives, just like in this video.

Just like the other members of BTS, he can also compose songs.

He acted as the director of their latest album BE. He has his Golden Closet Studio, in which he made wonderful videos of BTS’ offline travels and events.

He composed “Film Out” together with Japanese band, Back Number, as the ending theme for the Japanese thriller, “Signal the Movie Cold Case Investigation Unit.”

Some of Jeon Jungkook’s roles in the group are:

• Usually acts as the center of formations during performances

• As the lead vocals, he typically creates harmonies with the other members and sang the adlibs to their songs

• He is also a visual for BTS, just like the other members and labeled the “Sold Out King”, as items he had used often are sold out.

• Often provides laughter and fun to his ‘hyungs’ (older brothers) with his antics

• As the Golden Maknae, the hyungs rely on him for tasks that they are unable to accomplish

• Trendsetter, all of the members are trendsetters, but in March 2021, Jungkook broke another record for simultaneous viewers for a V Live with 22 million viewers in his solo live broadcast. It’s not the first time he did that.

According to Google Trends, he has been one of the most searched K-pop idol on Google Search too, as of 2021 Mid-Year Chart.

He held this position for the past 5 years. In the list, bandmate, V, comes in second while Jimin comes in third, with all the 7 members included in the top 25.

All of the BTS members are songwriters, producers, and dancers. The main roles are: three members rap (RM, J-Hope and Suga) and 4 members sing (Jin, Jungkook, Jimin and V).

The space in this post will not be enough if I include each of all their accomplishments. Hence, please take note, that there are dozens more individual achievements not included in this list.

Each of the BTS members has traits that contribute to the cohesion, camaraderie, and teamwork of the group.

When one is missing, the group members feel they are incomplete. Although, they could perform well with a member missing in action, they still acknowledge that the team is not complete with one member missing.

They support and motivate each other with their solo activities, but they always encourage their fandom to love all seven of them.

Sadly, you cannot say these with other groups. This is one reason that makes them different from other boy groups. They are unique, in a way.

On top of these sterling traits, they remain humble and grounded, always attributing their successes to their fandom, ARMY.
